Each November, the beacon at Split Rock Lighthouse is lit in remembrance of the 29-member crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald and all mariners lost at sea. At 2:15 p.m. on November 9, 1975, the 729-foot Mighty Fitz departed Superior, WI with a load of taconite, bound for Detroit's Zug Island. She disappeared from radar at 7:15 p.m. on November 10 in a fierce Lake Superior storm, while battling 25 foot waves and hurricane force winds.
