Fall ruffed grouse encounter in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).

Fall ruffed grouse encounter in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).

As I was setting up for dinner at our campsite, I heard the familiar sounds of a ruffed grouse rustling through the brush. I paused, hoping to catch a glimpse of this often elusive game bird. Much to my surprise, he strutted into plain view atop the granite outcropping of our campfire area and paused to check out his surroundings. I began to speak calmly to him as I slowly walked to gather my camera. While offering him abundant, sincere flattery, he seemed to proudly pose on the granite catwalk as I captured his essence with the splendorous backdrop of the autumn-kissed shoreline.
